My Journey Into Psychology
I developed a curiosity about why people think what they think and do what they do at a very young age. My questions were influenced largely by the times, as civil unrest was stirring the young impressionable hearts and minds of my generation. I read every philosophy book on the shelves of my middle school library, at the age of 12, and from there I began to study western theories of psychology.
The more I understood about myself, the more I understood about others and visa-versa. In my late teens and early 20s, I ventured into an 18-year long comparative study of all the major religions of the world. Born and raised a Christian, I was delighted to see the extent to which the very heart of Christianity, was represented in other religions, around the world. I was enchanted by the non-dogmatic themes of religion, and particularly with eastern religions, with their emphasis on quality of mind and being, over the accumulation and measure of matter. (Notice I said, "over," not "in place o.f') I shared what I read with anyone who would listen. As it turned out, people seemed to like what I talked about. Having a more global knowledge base and understanding seemed to help people put things in perspective.
People would come to me hurting, angry, or confused and somehow they went away feeling stronger, more self-aware, and confident, with a greater sense of self-efficacy, independence, and purpose. All I ever had to do was remind them of what they already knew.
Family and friends encouraged me many times to go into the field of psychology so I could hang a shingle to do what I had been doing for nearly two decades; counseling others and helping them not just manage, bury or detach from, but actually reign over their past and present experiences. So I entered college and earned my BA with Honors of Distinction, and then went on to earn my Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology and my license, so I can keep on doing what I do, just for you..
So, now it is your turn to come. I'll leave the porch light on....
